You've been lied to...

Why Traditional Shell Defense Falls Short

Coach,

You’ve probably run a shell drill a hundred times.

Closeout. Jump to the ball. Help. Recover.

It looks good in practice. But does it really teach defense?

At SAVI, we believe it doesn’t.

Here’s why:

Help is overrated.

Traditional shell is built on outdated assumptions. It teaches players to move based on a static formula—“Help when the ball is here, rotate when it goes there.”

But the game isn’t static. It’s dynamic. And that means your defense has to be, too.

So why are we rethinking the shell drill at SAVI?

Because it gives players incomplete information.

And in real games, the key to great defense isn’t memorizing positions—it’s reading situations.

The real questions are:

Who am I?
Who are they?
Where should I be?

The answers are always changing.

That’s what makes defense conceptual, just like offense. That’s why we don’t want robots on defense. We want readers. We want thinkers.

We want reading machines.

If you’re ready to level up your defensive teaching, check out our latest YouTube video.

We’ll show you how to teach, drill, and apply this approach in real-time.

This is SAVI Basketball. This is modern defense.

In our Lock Left Defense system, we teach you how to:

  • Take away what the offense wants most

  • Be elite in transition defense

  • Build a wall around the rim
