There’s a dangerous question coaches ask when planning practice:

“What else should we work on?”

I recently gave Mark a practice planning challenge.

No offensive system.
No rebounding.
No finishing.

What would you work on?

He landed on three things:

Shooting. Pressure. Toughness.

And suddenly the practice had a purpose.

Instead of trying to get to 12 different things, everything pointed back to three priorities.

That exercise reminded us of something:

A better practice isn’t a busier practice.

You can have good drills. Every minute accounted for. A beautiful practice plan.

That doesn’t make it a good practice.

A good practice plan addresses what your team needs right now.

So before I think about drills, I want to answer a more important question:

“What does my team need today?”

Then eliminate anything that distracts us from it.

That’s one reason I like our Four Quarter Practice Plan.

Pre-Practice → Prime → Q1 → Q2 → Q3 → Q4.

We teach early, then create game-like environments where the same lesson keeps showing up.

Different games.

Same through line.

You’re not constantly moving on to the next thing. You’re finding different ways to emphasize the main thing.

Try this before your next practice.

Before writing down a drill, finish this sentence:

“If we leave practice better at __________, today was successful.”

Maybe there are two answers. Maybe three. But there definitely shouldn’t be ten.

Because if you’ve ever walked out of practice wondering, Did we actually get better today?

You probably tried to get better at too many things.

This is why I’m excited about SAVI Sync.

Knowing you should simplify practice is one thing.

Actually doing it every day is harder.

You have to figure out what your team needs, find the right activities, create a through line, build the practice, and get everyone on the same page.

What I love hearing from coaches using SAVI Sync is how much simpler that process becomes.

It helps you go from:

“Here’s what we need to improve.”

to:

“Here’s how we’re going to practice it.”

Less hunting. Less clutter. More clarity.

Technology shouldn’t give coaches more things to think about.

It should help us think about the right things.

Stay SAVI,

Tyler

P.S. Yesterday we opened SAVI Sync to 1000 coaches and 500 already snagged a spot. If you want to simplify your practice planning and spend less time piecing everything together, grab one of the remaining spots before registration closes.
