NBA Film Session: A SAVI Breakdown

Hey Coach,

Mark and I tried something completely different this week.

We recorded ourselves watching an actual NBA game: Thunder vs Warriors.

Two beers, a laptop, and way too many opinions about split action.

Fair warning: We got deep into the weeds.

Like, arguing about whether wallets belong in back pockets deep. (They don't, by the way. Bad for your back, easy target for pickpockets, and I'm a satchel guy anyway.)

But here's the thing – this might be our most practical episode yet.

We're breaking down live offense and defense in real-time.

Calling out the reads players are making (and missing).

Showing you exactly what makes these NBA possessions work or fall apart.

Key Takeaways

Here are a few things we discussed in the video:

  • On Horns Sets

  • Split Action Gold

  • The Blast Series Trigger

  • Why Your Offense Isn't Broken

  • The Real Secret to Conceptual Offense

  • Short Rolls > Everything

  • Screening Is Player Skill, Not Script

  • Close and Fly (Not X-Outs)

And MUCH more.

We also made prop bets (I won $20).

Argued about Dungeons & Dragons (Mark's a dungeon master apparently).

Got way too excited about Jimmy Butler's footwork.

But we also broke down real offense and defense that you can use Monday at practice.

Plus, Mark's six-year-old can tell you everything about their last adventure in the whispering caves, but nothing about the real world. Which honestly sounds about right for a six-year-old.

Stay SAVI
-Tyler

P.S. Next week, we’re taking the week off for some much-needed R&R and family time. I hope you get to do the same, coach.

Happy Holidays to you and yours.
