EP 112: What coaches can learn from Duke's Loss
🎙️ The Hours
Hey Coach,
You know that feeling when you're watching a game, your team is up double digits, the lead feels safe, the clock is winding down… and then something shifts. The defense tightens. The offense gets hesitant. And suddenly the whole thing unravels in a way that seemed impossible five minutes ago.
Most coaches have been there. Maybe not on the biggest stage in college basketball, but in some gym, in some game, when the pressure hit and the wheels quietly came off. It's not always a blow-up moment. Sometimes it's just a slow drift away from what was working.
That's exactly what happened to Duke against UConn in March Madness and it's one of the most instructive possessions we've broken down on the show. This episode isn't really about Duke. It's about what happens to every team, at every level, when the moment gets big.
Key Takeaways
Never pass over a trap, only through or around it. The most costly mistake in the final possession wasn't the missed shot, it was a telegraphed pass right into the hands of the defense. Quick ball movement beats pressure; lob passes gift it.
Catch with the expectation to shoot. The UConn shooter didn't hesitate because he was already decided before the catch. If a player is catching and then deciding, the shot quality has already dropped, teach "planning to shoot before the catch."
Win the second battle. Most coaches drill the initial trap break, but the second trap, usually near half court, is where more turnovers actually happen. This is an undertaught part of beating pressure, and it deserves more practice rep time.
Don't stop running your offense under pressure. Duke abandoned their system and went ISO. The result: a loaded-up defense, stagnant teammates who hadn't touched the ball in minutes, and a best player forced into high-difficulty shots. This pattern shows up from youth leagues to the NBA.
Five minutes a day beats two hours once. Whether it's film study, analytics, or player development, consistent small investments compound faster than a single coaching clinic ever will.
One Action Item
This week in practice, run a late-game pressure scenario where your team is up 2-4 points with under 60 seconds left and your only rule is: keep running your offense.
No ISO, no ball-stopping, no "get it to our best player and clear out." Rep the exact habits you want your players to fall back on when the pressure is real. The goal isn't to script the perfect play. It's to build the identity that your offense doesn't change just because the moment got big.
