EP 109: What makes a GREAT player GREAT? | Ft. Reid Ouse
๐๏ธ The Hours
Hey Coach,
The game is changing all the time, thatโs one of the things I love about Basketball.
Are we keeping up with the game in order to develop the skills needed for todayโs game?
Position-less basketball isn't coming, it's already here, we have 7 footers as primary ball handlers and interchangeable 6โ8โโ wings. And the coaches who win, are the ones developing players who can do more run a play.
In this episode of The Hours, we sit down with world-renowned skill development coach, Reid Ouse to break down the 3 must-have skills that make any player, at any level, at any position, any size, any speed, invaluable on the floor.

Key Takeaways
Skill isn't just technique, it's technique + context. Knowing when to shoot matters just as much as how to shoot. The best players aren't just athletic โ they're the best problem solvers.
The 3 universal skills every player should develop
Shooting: Shooters get paid. From Klay Thompson to your role players, the ability to knock down a shot extends careers, creates opportunities, and unlocks your entire offense.
Playing in space off the ball: If you can play in space, the ball finds you. It creates driving lanes, opens teammates, and makes your team harder to guard.
Playing off two feet: This is the ultimate multiplier. In the Big South Championship, teams shot 80% at the rim off two feet vs. 33% off one foot. Better balance = better vision, more assists, more points, fewer turnovers.
Better players beat better systems. You don't need to overhaul your playbook, develop these three things and you can score 10-12 more points per game without changing anything else.
One Action Item
Watch your next practice or film session through this lens: Can my players shoot? Can they play in space? Do they play off two feet? That's it. Identify your biggest gap and make it a coaching priority before your next game.
The answers will tell you exactly where to focus your player development energy.
