Are You Boring Your Players

Chances are the answer is yes...

It was Day 1 of the Seattle Storm Training Camp. The gym was lit, the talent was there, a legend in Sue Bird, an emerging superstar in Breanna Stewart and a cold blooded shot maker in Jewell Loyd.

There were legit hoopers up and down the roster and they were fired up, bouncing with energy, ready to get after it. But thirty minutes later, the coach was still talking. The power and focus were lost and what was shaping up to be an epic competitive practice, became a frustrating exercise in complexity.

Simplicity Wins.

You can have all the coaching knowlede, a great practice plan and superior talent. But, if you talk too much, get too complex or don’t feel the pulse of the group, you’ll lose them.

Chances are you talk too much, players stand too long and you’re losing impact. I know because I do too.

Watch the video below to hear a specific example, but here’s the 3 step formula to keep yourself in check and have a more engaged team.

  1. Share the objective and organization in 60 seconds or less, and get them going.

  2. Observe and raise your standards when you identify the area of improvement. These are reminders of what matters most about HOW you do things. This is NOT new teaching.

  3. Plus 1 - throughout the exercise introduce a single new teaching or emphasis AFTER you are into it. Each additional thing you say dilutes the effectiveness of them all.

Based on the length of time you are using an exercise, you may have a single plus 1 or many. A SAVI coach can keep the group in the pocket by adding the right challenge at the right time. I covered that here if you want to understand how to do that better.

I’m Tyler and I help coaches win more games, have more fun and become respected teachers.
